Chandler's Ford Parish Council

Mrs Doreen Welfare

It is with great sadness that the Council announces the death of Doreen Wellfare.

Doreen Wellfare represented the Borough’s Hiltingbury Ward for thirty eight years making her the Council’s longest serving lady member and was elected Mayor of Eastleigh in 1980.

Mrs Wellfare was also awarded the Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Eastleigh in November 2008 in recognition of her service to the Borough Council as a past Mayor, and her other public service roles for the community.

She was first elected to the Council in 1970 when it comprised the areas of Chandler’s Ford, Eastleigh and Bishopstoke. She took a leading interest in housing and one of residential homes in Eastleigh town centre is named after her.

During her Mayoral year she raised what was then a record amount through her charity appeal to help fund the purchase of the Wessex Body Scanner. She also launched the borough’s first glass recycling bank and welcomed Eastleigh built locomotive 828 back to the town for its historic restoration.

Mayor of Eastleigh Cllr Tony Noyce said “We are all deeply saddened by the news that Doreen has passed away. She was highly respected and a great servant to the residents of the Borough of Eastleigh. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this sad time.”

Funeral prices

Across the UK there has been a steady increase in the cost of funerals, moreso than that of inflation, wages as well as pensions. This includes the South of England. The Chandlers Ford area has some of the priciest funerals around. A few companies are trying to offer a cheaper alternative whereas many are taking advantage to get more money from their customers. Do your due diligence and make sure they are registered with the NFDA.

Verge Parking

People wrongly assume that by parking with two wheels off the road they are being courteous to road users but in reality this is far from the truth.

This not only encourages traffic to speed but such parked cars become obstacles to pedestrians with visual impairness and for parents with toddlers who may be forced to walk in the road!

In addition there is considerable damage caused to the verges where verge parking takes place and damage to underground services can also result. There are areas around Chandler's Ford where verge parking can result in a fixed penalty notice but vehicles users are politely requested not to park on the grass verges.
